What to Look for in Home Gym Flooring

Home gym flooring should be durable and serve its purpose, but that doesn't mean that you have to give up on flooring that's also attractive. So what should you be looking for with regard to home gym flooring?

Start with the service factor. Home gym flooring will play an important role in your home gym and your exercise regimen. Knowing what kinds of exercises you'll likely be doing in the home gym will play an important role in what kind of home gym flooring is most appropriate. For example, if you're planning to do tumbling and gymnastics, you may want to go to the trouble and expense of a spring floor. Soft carpeting may also be a good option if you're planning to do exercising that requires you to be on the floor (such as situps or crunches).

Durability is certainly important for your home gym flooring, but there are some things you can do to help protect your floor. Mats for treadmills and other exercise equipment can save wear and tear on your floors, especially from heavy equipment that rests on legs rather than a flat platform. Those legs can dig into even durable home gym flooring over time because of the weight and the motion.

Tile is a good idea for home gym flooring because it's easy to replace if you do encounter a problem. For example, one leg of your treadmill wears a spot on your floor that you don't discover until you move the machine. Or it could be that jumping rope in a particular spot for months on end wears down the floor in that spot. Or maybe it was moving some furniture or piece of equipment that caused damage on a particular spot. Regardless of what caused the damage, a couple of damaged tiles can be replaced without facing the expense of completely replacing your home gym flooring.

If you choose tile for your home gym flooring, carefully consider what it's made to withstand. Most ceramic tiles simply aren't made to withstand the rigors or weight of exercise equipment.

Finally, remember to choose home gym flooring that's easy to clean. The last thing you need is to be spending your exercise time trying to scrub the floor in your home gym.
